In the Spring 2021 semester, MMB students were tasked with identifying an unmet need, creating an innovative solution for it, and developing a business model canvas. Students performed primary and secondary research to determine scientific and technical feasibility, market and sales, and financial and operational information relevant to their product and business plan.

The Catstone team determined that feline periodontal disease as a major unmet need in veterinary health as preventative measures are inefficient and prophylactic actions are costly for cat owners. The team identified a patent for a prebiotic technology that can be applied to oral microbiome in order to improve oral health. Using this technology, the team developed a business plan for a cat treat with the patented prebiotic formulation to reduce the likelihood of periodontal disease and improve gingivitis, halitosis, and plaque tartar buildup.
